In the first study of its kind, The Girls’ Schools Association has just launched its collaborative study into girls’ schools across the UK and beyond, in what is set to be the most comprehensive survey into women and girls’ experiences of girls’ education to date.
As part of its 150th year, GSA (The Girls’ Schools Association) has issued a rallying and unifying call to Heads, teachers, pupils, parents, and alumnae to take part from every kind of girls’ school, bringing together both state and independent schools. The ambition is to give voice to every generation, providing the fullest expression of the female experience all the way from the curiosity of the youngest of girls to the most experienced alumnae stateswomen.
Examining the benefit of girls’ schools and how they uniquely unleash the potential of young women today, GSA’s landmark study forms part of its continued commitment to the education of girls.
Donna Stevens, GSA Chief Executive says: ‘As the expert membership organisation of girls’ schools the Girls’ Schools Association has always championed the benefits of a girls first education. Our regularly commissioned research series with our member schools stand as proof points of our belief that girls’ schools serve girls best. In our 150th year I’m proud to be able to extend our welcome to everyone who has ever worked or studied in a girls’ school to join with us, as we seek to understand ever more deeply the vital contribution girls’ schools make to create a more equitable world. We want to hear from everyone – pupils, parents, teachers, and old pupils alike – the whole girls’ schools’ community. We have achieved so much in the past 150 years but there is still much to do!”
The research survey is now open for all to participate, and comes complete with an information pack, plus additional teaching resource for teachers to use to help guide younger pupils. All are welcome to participate who have experience of working in or attending a girls’ school (including parents of children in attendance).

GSA has always honoured those who have fought for girls’ education rights. Their legacy inspires the Association to this day. Pioneers like Francis Buss and Dorothy Beale the founders of what has become GSA today; trailblazers like Sophie Bryant who overcame barriers to become the first woman to earn a BA, BSc and Doctor of Science; and modern day activists such as Malala Yousafsai, and Soma Sara of Everyone’s Invited.
